RITES – Rural Inclusion Training & Essential Skills

The RITES project was set-up to overcome the barriers that people in rural locations face when accessing learning opportunities. We are concentrating on the delivery of essential skills (Literacy and Numeracy) to adults between 16 and 64 who live or work in Shropshire. If necessary, we may be able to support people with transport and childcare costs and can also deliver the training in areas other than college locations such as village halls, the work place or anywhere that is large enough to accommodate between 5 and 10 learners.

We will provide beneficiaries with the following service for free:

In the first instance the beneficiary will need to speak to us to assess their eligibility. Most of this can be done on the phone or we can arrange to conduct an open session at an organisation or workplace.

The diagnostic will usually be completed at the same place as learning is to take place and will be done by a qualified essential skills tutor. The diagnostic will then form the basis of the tailored course. The course length will depend on the individual. They may only need a few weeks to get them to a level where they can sit the test or they may need a number of months.

They will be entered for a qualification at Entry 3, Level 1 or Level 2 in Literacy or Numeracy and if they are successful, will get a nationally recognised City and Guilds certificate.

This is an ideal accompaniment for existing training where there is a need for support in literacy or numeracy. (i.e. a care N.V.Q. Here there is a need for a level of literacy and Numeracy understanding to deal with medication charts.)
